If you've been prescribed thyroid medication (Levothyroxine/Synthroid/Unithroid/Levoxyl), taking it, every day as directed is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
Your thyroid gland produces hormones that control your metabolism, how your body uses energy. When your thyroid doesn't make enough hormone, your medication fills that gap. Skipping doses or taking them inconsistently can leave you feeling tired, foggy, and sluggish, and may lead to weight gain, high cholesterol, and even heart problems over time.
Here are a few tips to stay on track:
- Take it at the same time each day, ideally on an empty stomach 30–60 minutes before eating.
- If you miss your morning dose, take it in the evening 4 hours after your last meal or other medication.
- Avoid taking it with calcium, iron, or antacids, as these can block absorption.
- Use a weekly pill organizer so you can easily spot a missed dose.
- If you take biotin supplements, hold for 2-3 days before completing your thyroid labs as this can interfere with lab values
Studies have shown that about 1 in 5 patients on thyroid medication still have levels that are too high or too low, often due to missed doses. Regular blood tests help to fine-tune your dose; but the medication only works if you are consistent.
Remember to treat your thyroid medication as an important replacement to keeping you healthy.
