“American Idol” finalist Jax, a 20-year-old singer, has revealed that she is battling thyroid cancer. According to reports, Jax was diagnosed in the Spring and underwent surgery to remove the thyroid and several lymph nodes. The singer became chronically ill with respiratory and exhaustion issues while on “American Idol.” The diagnosis came when doctors found 18 tumors on her thyroid. Jax is still continuing to undergo radiation treatment following the removal of her thyroid.
Thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age than most other adult cancers. Approximately 3 out of 4 cases are found in women. It is estimated that 62,450 new cases of thyroid cancer will occur in the United States this year.
