Managing diabetes is challenging and requires thoughtful effort daily to achieve optimal blood sugar control. Thankfully the new Dexcom G7 app update 2.9 introduces three new features that “are sure to help keep you engaged and motivated to take a more active role in your diabetes care while making it as easy as possible.” The three new features include: 7-day GMI – Glucose Management Indicator or GMI is an estimation of your next a1c result. Previously a minimum of 14 days of data was required for a GMI estimate, but now only 7 days of data are needed to see if you are heading in the right direction or if adjustments are needed with diet and activity, for example. Keep in mind that A1c is a 90-day estimate of blood sugar levels so a 7-day GMI is an estimate based on only a fraction of data. Customizable glucose target – The standard target glucose range is 70-180, however this may not be the most appropriate range for some individuals. Depending on the type of diabetes and other factors, for example pregnancy, glucose goals may be different. The target is also customizable at different times of day. Always speak to your doctor or diabetes educator before adjusting the high and low glucose targets. AI-powered food logging – Benefits of food logging may include improved blood sugar control, creating greater awareness of eating habits, better portion control and greater weight loss or weight maintenance. A major barrier of food logging, however, is that it takes time and effort. With the “Smart Food Log” feature you can take a photo of your meal and AI will identify the ingredients and auto-populate a meal description. You can edit the description if AI doesn’t get it quite right. The logged meal is then tied into your glucose data. By navigating to the History tab and then tapping on the photo, you can view a graph of your glucose trend and summary of glucose levels before eating and up to 4 hours after the meal (the targets are customizable). This can be a helpful tool to see which meals are more likely to meet your post-meal glucose goals and which meals may be more likely to result in highs, for example. At this time the macronutrients of the meal are not populated by AI but you can manually enter the estimated carbohydrate grams. Coming soon: “Trends tab” – There are more app updates on the horizon that include a “Trends” tab. This feature will provide a more comprehensive view of health information by integrating data from event logging – such as food, activity and medications – for a more detailed analysis of glucose trends over a customizable period. Extended wear sensor – In April the FDA approved the Dexcom G7 15-day wear sensor for adults age18 and older with plans to launch later this year. It includes the same 12-hour grace period as the 10-day sensor but boasts a slight improvement in sensor accuracy. It will use the same Dexcom G7 app and receiver. Dexcom is working with insulin pump companies that are currently compatible with Dexcom G7 to ensure compatibility with the 15-day sensor when it becomes available.
